Nicki Minaj officially joins Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson to judge the new season of American Idol along with country singer Keith Urban… Was this the right decision though? More after the jump!
After weeks of rumours curculating the Web Nicki Minaj will officially join Mariah Carey as an American Idol judge and that’s not all as work begins TODAY. According to Fox news the networks literally finished signing up Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj moments before the job was due to start as auditions kick off this afternoon.
According to Fox News the decision that swung it for Nicki Minaj was her ever growing success within pop culture;
“With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around.”
“Idol” is looking for its famous new faces to supercharge a show that remains a ratings leader but has seen its viewership and pop-culture clout erode in recent seasons in an increasingly crowded talent show field. Besides Fox sibling “The X Factor,” which recently added Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, there’s NBC’s “The Voice,” which boasts Christina Aguilera among its big names.
Minaj, 29, is known for her colorful hairstyles, wardrobe and antics. A native of Trinidad who grew up in New York, she has scored with hits like “Starships,” ”Turn Me On,” and “Super Bass,” her seventh single, which has sold more than 4 million copies.
She is the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She released her second studio album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” in April, and since then it has sold 1 million copies worldwide.
But the question is do we agree that Nicki Minaj would make a good judge? I feel that although Nicki can display extreme cases of erratic behaviour (See: Supid Hoe Video) she is also very well spoken, opinionated and strong enough in character to handle a major show such as American Idol.
The only thing that is certain is, one this will only cerment her as a ‘Pop’ star as aposed to a ‘Hip Hop’ star proving that she has left her roots behind, and also the fact that she will be playing backseat to the megastar herself Mariah. Let’s wait and see how this turns out, it should make for great TV I mean Mariah can get quite wild herself just watch as she calls Usher a MF*****
